Ingredients
- 1 1/3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 1/2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus extra for sprinkling
- Pinch of ground allspice or ground cloves
- Pinch of kosher salt
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tablespoons dark rum
- 1/3 cup whipped cream (optional)
- 1 cinnamon stick (4 inches long)
Instructions
- Place the unsalted butter in a medium heatproof bowl and let it soften at room temperature.
- Add the dark brown sugar, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, freshly grated nutmeg, ground allspice or ground cloves, and kosher salt to the softened butter.
- Use an electric hand mixer to beat the mixture on high speed until fluffy and smooth for about 2 minutes.
- Boil the water in a kettle or medium saucepan. Let it cool slightly for about 30 seconds.
- Carefully pour the water into the butter mixture and add the dark rum.
- Beat the mixture with the mixer on medium speed until the butter is dissolved and the mixture is frothy, for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Divide the mixture between mugs and top with whipped cream if desired.
- Sprinkle with more freshly grated nutmeg and garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick.
